Sustainability reporting is good business. It helps companies track their progress on material issues and tune their strategy in a fluid environment. It provides transparency to stakeholders and keeps the focus on improving the natural and work environments.
Although many companies report into the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)—a standardized reporting matrix—each business sector has unique issues and each company has unique stories to tell. Much of the information being shared is highly technical, and needs to be made accessible to all audiences while remaining relevant and credible to sustainability professionals.
Our role is to help companies tell their stories. We look for opprtunities to bring these stories to life with images and narrative content—providing a strong editorial framework and information graphics to enrich the experience and deepen understanding.
Here are some examples:
Covanta is part of the green industry. The company produces clean energy from municipal solid waste. This is a story anyone can relate to because we are all required to decide what to do with our things once they have reached the end of their useful life. Covanta offers an alternative to the disposal practices we are familiar with. They reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill while generating energy. Because of the nature of their business, their reporting has a strong energy and environment focus that is of interest to environmental activists and concerned municipalities. Covanta also reports on their extensive community involvement and employee work/life initiatives as part of their overall view of sustainability.
